Local Oneonta Rotarians in conjunction with Opportunities for Otsego helped to distribute over 48 new warm, winter coats to needy children across Otsego County and the surrounding area.

01.29.2013 - Clarks Sharks Raise Money for the Homeless
On December 21st, 70 kids from the Clark Sports Center Sharks swim team jumped in their pool and swam and swam and swam. By the end of the 90-minute swim-a-thon, they had completed a total of 4,079 lengths (more than 58 miles) to raise almost $2,000 for Opportunities for Otsego.

More than a decade ago, the energy industry was restructured in New York to provide consumers the opportunity to purchase electricity and natural gas from an energy service company (ESCO). The New York State Public Service Commission has recently initiated a proceeding, Case 12-M-0476, to consider potential new rules and regulations to improve the operation of retail energy markets for the benefit of consumers.

Singer/songwriters Dana LaCroix and Murali Coryell raised $1,835 in support of Opportunities for Otsego emergency housing shelter. The funds were raised through ticket sales from performances at The Oneonta Theatre and a salon concert in Cooperstown at the home of Holly Hren.

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train of Lights is scheduled to stop in Oneonta on Thursday, November 29th at 1:15pm at the James Georgeson railroad crossing outside Neahwa Park.  Spectators are asked to bring non-perishable food items and monetray donations to support Opportunities for Otsego.

In 2010 Congress began dedicating the entire month of February to teen dating violence awareness and prevention. Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month recognizes that domestic violence affects people of all ages and power-based relationship violence may begin early. The month is celebrated by leaders in government, student bodies, schools, youth service providers, community-based organizations, parents and more.
 
The facts on teen dating violence are startling; relationship violence among teens is very common.

Several openings are still available for the 10th annual Give Kids a Smile Day from 9:00AM – 3:00PM, Friday February 3rd at the Northern Catskill Dental Associates in Cooperstown. The event is open to children ages 2 through 12 with no dental insurance or Medicaid. One procedure will be performed per child. Referrals will be given if more dental work is needed.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today launched an $8 million appliance grant program for those who sustained property damage as a result of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. In keeping with ongoing changes in the increasingly competitive telecommunications industry, the New York State Public Service Commission has directed Verizon, the state's largest provider of traditional landline telephone service, to focus its repair and maintenance efforts on "core" customers in need of regulatory protection.

David Bradley, Executive Director of the National Community Action Foundation recently sat down with American RadioWorks to contribute to their new public radio documentary series.  The series examines the history as well as the ongoing struggle of our nation's battle against poverty.

6.22.10 - WIC Offering Walk-in Appointments
On Wednesday, June 30th the WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) program will be accepting walk-in appointments. This day is for both currently enrolled participants to make up recently missed appointments and an opportunity for women and children not enrolled in the program to sign-up.

Each year, the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other national and local entities across the country organizes National HIV Testing Day. This year, June 27th has been designated for this event.

Opportunities for Otsego is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Tanya Shalor.  Ms. Shalor, who recently held the position of Publisher at The Daily Star, will assume the position of Head Start Director on June 1, 2010.

5.18.10 - Head Start Establishes Permanent Residency in Schenevus
Through grant funding from the Head Start National Office, The Community Foundation for South Central New York, and the Freedman Foundation, Opportunities for Otsego purchased the Schenevus Valley Grange in early May. Financial assistance from these organizations will also support future renovations to the historic landmark including energy-conservation improvements.

THE 10TH ANNUAL RIVER RIDE - Register Today

Join us, June 5th for the 10th annual River Ride. OFO will be again offering riders five cycling routes to choose from. Each route winds through the beautiful Susquehanna Valley and offers enjoyment for riders of all skill levels.

Opportunities for Otsego will stop accepting new applications for heating assistance on May 14th. After this date, households with an emergency heating situation must apply for Emergency Aid to Families through the Department of Social Services

5.7.10 - Otsego County Proclaims May as “Community Action Month”

In honor on National Community Action Month, the Otsego County Board of Representatives proclaimed May as “Community Action Month” in Otsego County. A proclamation was also made by the City of Oneonta Mayor, Richard P. Miller, during the April 30th Common Council Meeting.

Community Action Month is an opportunity for Community Action Agencies (CAA) nationwide to renew their promise of community action - to help people and change lives - to call attention to poverty-related problems, and recognize the work of CAA’s who are fighting poverty at the local level.

Coming May 6th - “Surviving a Money Crunch” Workshop

On Thursday, May 6th Opportunities for Otsego is hosting a money management workshop.  The 1-hour workshop, “Surviving a Money Crunch”, is designed for anyone facing a financial crisis such as a loss of income or major unexpected expense.  Participants will learn how to prioritize their obligations and gain control of the situation.
